Plenty to Celebrate as the 2024 Aussies Come to a Close

Racer runs to the finish line

Sunday the 21st of April, marked the conclusion of the 2024 Aussies, in Maroochydore. 9 days of intense racing and competition came to a close with all the individual events. Big swell and rain were forecasted, keeping everything interesting and unpredictable for all competitors (as had been the theme for the week). Preparing and navigating moments like this is what they’ve trained for.

Racers were also kept on their toes, as the constant changes to scheduling due to the weather and conditions, meant that events were shifted. Mental preparation and resilience was challenged as much as physical preparation at this time.
An example comes from the U17 Female Surf Ski Final where Zoe Moore placed 5th (incredible effort), this event was scheduled to run on Sunday, amongst the finals atmosphere of that day, however was relegated to Friday due to conditions.

There were some fairytale finishes throughout the week, with our U17 girls – Milly Kok, Annika Negus, and Olivia Doddy, taking out the Board Relay Championship. This completes their season, after this combination won both the U17 & Open State Championship in March, before finishing with a National Title at Aussies.
We also had some back-to-back success with our U23 Mixed March Past team clinching gold for a 2nd consecutive year, on the Super Sunday, final day. Jazmin Shipway-Carr achieved her goal of finishing in the top 5 in the Open ski race, continuing her strong form from states to be recognized as not just the best in WA, but one of the best in Australia.

It wasn’t just the girls who displayed their impressive athleticism, with some exceptional results coming from our male competitors. Max Hunter, swam his way into the Open Surf Race final on Sunday, where he faced off against some of the biggest names in Surf Sports, such as Ali Day. Reece Baker, Dan Humble, and Brendon Sarson showed their experience as they made the final for the Open Male Ski Relay, finishing 9th.
With plenty of top 5 finishes, and finalists there is so much to celebrate, and we are proud of all our competitors, coaches, officials, water safety, and support staff, and thank them all for representing our club at the highest standard on the National Stage.
